 What is the "Bay Area Legal Forum?

The Bay Area Legal Secretaries Forum(Forum) was organized in 1966 by legal secretaries from nine (9) Bay Area counties to fill a need for continuing education for legal secretaries in the Continuing Education of the Bar tradition.

With a relatively small membership, the Forum holds a quarterly workshop in the Bay Area each year (January) and at multi-workshop seminars in the Spring and Fall.

Although most workshop speakers are attorneys, the work of the Forum members in preparing these educational programs is little known. The volunteer membership works year round and is responsible for every aspect of the programs presented, including the text of the brochures announcing the workshops; the selection of all subject material; the planning, recruiting, and supervising of all panels; a majority of the writing and all of the production and proofreading of the copy for handout materials for all workshops.

Until 1973, the Forum presented only two (2) large seminars in the spring with the assistance of the University of California Extension, which provided mailing, printing, facility and registration for the 1000 people who attended each year.

In 1974 the Forum began presenting two (2) smaller quarterly workshops on single subjects, without outside assistance.

Beginning in 1978 the Forum took complete responsibility for their full educational programs.

 The Forum was granted MCLE provider status by the State Bar of California in 1994.

Our members are made up of legal secretaries, paralegals, attorneys, and court staff throughout the Bay Area. Our membership meets approximately every six to eight weeks to plan our programs. Here are some photos from one of our meetings.


In 2011, the Forum officially changed its name to the "Bay Area Legal Forum."

Although most Forum workshop speakers are attorneys, the volunteer Forum membership works year-round and is responsible for every aspect of the program including:

planning, recruiting, and coordinating the panel
writing and proofreading of copy for handout materials.
